DIY Door Trim

Today I would like to share a DIY home project with you all that I hope you will find helpful. Even though our home is over 100 years old, many of the charming little details have sadly been ripped out over the years and replaced with inexpensive builder grade options. One example of this in our home that always bugged me were our interior doors. We figured an easy and fairly inexpensive way to dress them up would be to add simple trim in a classic pattern.

I am lucky enough to have a husband who is getting pretty handy in his now year of homeownership. So for this project, the key is to measure twice, cut once. :) Here is what you will need:

• Flat trim (lots of it!)
• Wood filler
• Saw
• Nails
• Hammer
• Sand paper
• Door paint

1. Put your design idea to paper to make sure the logistics work out
2. Measure your doors (not all are always the same size!)
3. Make sure the blank border on the door between the trim and the edge of the door is the same on all doors to make them appear consitent
4. Figure out how much trim you will need (I would recommend purchasing about 5% extra)
5. Cut your trim piece to size, and then nail into place. Brian pre-drilled a tiny bit into the top of the wood trim so that the nail will sit flush and be less noticeable)
6. Once all of the pieces are in place, you will need to fill in any gappy corners and nail holes with wood filler
7. Let the wood filler dry for a few hours, then sand smooth
8. Now you get to paint! We ended up doing two coats
